THE BEST VOLUNTEERS...AND THE RETURN OF THE COSSACKS!

NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK, APRIL 15 - 21

Oseredok has the best volunteers! Whether coming for their shift in the Boutique, picking up boxes of stuffed envelopes to deliver to the post office, or meticulously sorting through boxes of donated documents, our volunteers do so with extraordinary dedication.
Some proudly call their volunteer work "my job", others say "I just love being here at Oseredok".
Whatever the reasons driving them to be here or to answer a call for assistance, we are truly and humbly grateful for them!
In the course of a year approximately 60 volunteers spend over 2,000 hours helping Oseredok with workshops, exhibits, receptions, collections management, building maintenance, and so much more!
They help get every job done, and they make every job easier!
We salute their dedication and their incredible spirit of volunteerism!
Дякуємо!

 LEGACY OF THE COSSACK ELITE

A repeat performance, this exhibition highlights some unusual artifacts in Oseredok's collection from the 17th and 18th centuries. Cossack society of that time was made up of various social classes. At the top of the social structure was a wealthy and powerful political elite called the Cossack starshyna. Its tastes permeated the arts, literature, music, education, customs and manners, including fashion. Legacy of the Cossack Elite places textile design within the context of the clothing of the period, reflecting on secular life and religious ritual of the time.

WITH ALEC IN MIND
Kegan McFadden
April 21 to June 9, 2012

Related to an exhibition at the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba, this show consists of a series of images on postcards referencing the life of Alex Tabolotney, McFadden's great uncle, who was murdered in 1995. The images represent an exploration of family memories, moments in time from family albums.

The book With Alec in Mind is available at Oseredok Boutique!

WHAT'S NEW IN THE BOUTIQUE
A DEAL....OF COURSE!

Buy Making Bombs for Hitler at the regular price....

....get the companion book Stolen Child for only $5.00

Marsha Skrypuch's newest book Making Bombs for Hitler tells the story of Lida, who is abducted from Reichskommissariat, Ukraine in 1943 and forced to work for the Nazis in Germany as an Eastern Worker, or Ostarbeiter. The Ostarbeiters are subcontracted as slave labourers for both private industry and the military. They receive nominal payment, but heavy deductions are made for the starvation diet they are given and the prison-like accommodations in which they are forced to live.
Based on the true stories of surviving Ukrainian Ostarbeiters, it has only been in the last few decades that Ostarbeiters have felt comfortable enough to share their wartime experiences, as they initially feared extradition to the Soviet Union and imprisonment there after the war.
