The Return Of Ancestral Gods

Book Launch at Oseredok.
The Return Of Ancestral Gods:
Modern Ukrainian Paganism Between Politics and Aesthetics

Drawing upon her book The Return of Ancestral Gods: Modern Ukrainian Paganism as an Alternative Vision for a Nation, Dr. Mariya Lesiv will introduce the new religious movement of contemporary Ukrainian Paganism. The movement saw its most vibrant development in the post-World War II Ukrainian North American diaspora and post-Soviet Ukraine. Today, although in decline in the diaspora, it is rapidly growing in Ukraine, involving many different Pagan communities and thousands of believers. Dr. Lesiv will focus on the aesthetics of this new religion and how it may influence the further development of Ukrainian Paganism.
Dr. Mariya Lesiv is an Assistant Professor of Folklore at Memorial University of Newfoundland
Dr. Lesiv’s book may be purchased at Oseredok

Andriana Chuchman and Tracy Dahl Perform at Oseredok’s Benefit Gala

Oseredok Ukrainian Cultural and Educational Centre is hosting a performance of soprano Andriana Chuchman and her mentor Tracy Dahl at a Benefit Concert Dinner Gala “From the Met to the Met.” The event will take place Saturday, May 10, 2014 at the Metropolitan Entertainment Centre in Winnipeg with presenting sponsor Canad Inns Your Destination Centres.

Andriana Chuchman will be appearing fresh from her début at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York earlier this year .Commenting on her most recent success, she declared, “In a way, my journey to the Met began in my childhood and youth singing Ukrainian songs around a campfire and in Ukrainian community and church choirs and performing with my sister, Olesia, as the “Chuchman Sisters” at various Ukrainian events and festivals in Canada and in the U.S.A.. This gave me pride in my Ukrainian heritage and culture. I grew to value institutions like Oseredok for its resources of Ukrainian music and culture that allowed me to develop a Ukrainian repertoire.”

Ms. Chuchman, a native of Winnipeg, graduated from the School of Music at the University of Manitoba in Voice Performance under the tutelage and mentorship of Tracy Dahl. Her career blossomed into singing leading roles at leading opera houses including Lyric Opera of Chicago, Washington National Opera, Glimmerglass Festival, Canadian Opera Company, Glyndebourne Opera in England, as well as the Edmonton and Manitoba Opera companies, among others. Her recent performances at the Metropolitan Opera have been received with critical acclaim, with her début described as “an assured, sparkling success”, and her voice having a “melting fullness, shifting with exuberant vigor from long, lyrical phrases to glittering little tumble of notes” (New York Times).

Tracy Dahl, Canada’s premier coloratura soprano Tracy Dahl leads an illustrious career that has brought her together with major opera houses such as La Scala in Milan, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, San Francisco Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Canadian Opera Company, the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris and also the Vancouver and Manitoba Opera Companies, to name a few. Ms. Dahl, also a native of Winnipeg, inspires developing artists as a role model, teaching at the University of Manitoba, Faculty of Music, and also at young artist programs in Canada and the U.S.A., including the Adler and Merola Opera programs at the San Francisco Opera Center, and the Banff Centre. Critics have described her voice as possessing “superlative coloratura” (Globe and Mail) and being “deliciously accurate, stratospheric” (Opera).

Exhibition at Oseredok!

THE ART OF REVOLUTION: THE POLITICAL AESTHETICS OF UKRAINE'S EUROMAIDAN
Posters from the early days in Independence Square.
The poster images that adorned Kyiv’s Independence Square or the Euromaidan during the heady days of late November and December 2013 capture the energy and vitality of this transformative process. The betrayal of Ukraine’s European future by the country’s governing elite and their subsequent attempt at brutally silencing both opponents and critics brought out hundreds of thousands in protest to the Maidan.

Accompanied by first-person accounts and other reports, the fifty posters displayed at Oseredok circulated widely on the Maidan. Designed and created for mass distribution through the medium of the private printer, they testify to a deep desire for a change and are symbolic of the best impulses of a society mobilizing in its own defense.
