Driving through Ukraine one comes across roadside crosses, firugres of the Mother of God or saints, tiny chapels and other monuments, many of them testament to the deep spirituality of the people who erected and cared for them. Dr Svitlana Kukharenko will shed light on this tradition and its significance in an illustrated presentation on the subject (in Ukrainian).

Dr. Svitlana Kukharenko has a PhD in Ukrainian Folklore from the University of Alberta. Currently, she is a joint Post-Doctoral Fellow at the University of Manitoba with the Department of German and Slavic Studies and the Centre for Ukrainian Canadian Studies.

Gallery 1C03 & Oseredok Ukrainian Cultural and Educational Centre are pleased to co-present I like to believe I am telling the truth, a double-sited solo exhibition of new and recent work by Manitoba artist Chris Reid. The exhibition includes large-scale pastel drawings, quirky re-interpretations of Ukrainian Easter eggs and multi-media sculptural installations that incorporate recycled and found objects. Through these diverse media, Reid invents lush visual narratives containing a sundry cast of characters – from folkloric symbols of her Ukrainian heritage and her husband’s African heritage such as Baba Yaga buildings and Anansi the spider to idiosyncratic anthropomorphic cats, dolls, bunnies and bread – that play out their actions in surreal prairie landscapes and unsettling domestic environments.

Reid’s art is beguiling in its playful yet cynical nature and its realization in ultra bright colours, unexpected materials and widely differing scales. The artist’s day job as a housing resource and homelessness coordinator and her roles as a wife and mother greatly inform the psychological tensions evident in her compositions. As Reid notes, her art is “a deceptively inviting metaphor for anxiety, obsessive thought and coping. It is about the desire to belong, to be a part of a community, the frustration and disappointment of having ideals mangled and the not-necessarily-logical need to meet expectations.” Reid deals in ideas with which most of us negotiating the varied demands of contemporary life can identify.

Chris Reid is a visual artist and educator based out of Brandon, Manitoba. Reid completed Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Education degrees from the University of Alberta as well as two Master of Fine Arts degrees from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of Windsor, where she specialized in painting, drawing and intaglio. In addition to her artistic practice, Reid has worked as a contemporary art curator and is employed as a Housing Resource Worker for the Brandon Regional Health Authority. She has been the recipient of grants for her art from the Manitoba Arts Council and the Alberta Foundation for the Arts. Reid has exhibited across Canada and in the United States for more than 25 years, including recent solo exhibitions at the Yukon Arts Centre, Latitude 53 and the Thames Art Gallery. I like to believe I am telling the truth is Chris Reid’s first solo exhibition in Winnipeg. It will travel to the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba later in 2012.

Gallery 1C03, Oseredok and the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba will produce a publication related to this exhibition featuring a critical essay by contemporary art curator and writer Mary Reid. Expected launch date will coincide with the opening of I like to believe I am telling the truth at the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba in December of 2012.

This emerging contemporary form of pysanka writing has become popular both here in Canada and Ukraine. It involves a new technique in which the egg is submerged in vinegar or acid, rather than dye. Oseredok is excited to offer this "how to" class on learning this new technique. The class is geared for those who have mastered the skill of traditional pysanky writing. CLASS SIZE IS LIMITED. The story of the pysanka is a narrative of ideas about life, death, eternity, immortality, rebirth, identity, belonging, community, tradition and innovation. It connectsa us to the past, the present, and future. Using images of pysanky from Oseredok's collections, S. Kachor, Chief of Collections, will explore this narrative by telling the story of the designs and symbols on the pysanka from three perspectives: the original ancient pre-Christian tradition, the impact of Christianity on the tradition, and the contribution of Ukrainian Canadians to the pysanka narrative.

FESTIVAL OF CAROLS

This past Sunday, January 8th, was an unseasonably balmy afternoon on the prairies, not at all what one is used to on the second day of Свята in Winnipeg!

It helped brighten the mood for some 800 people who gathered at Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral for Oseredok's annual Festival of Carols!

With the guidance of MC Sophia Kachor, they were treated to the sometimes prayerful, sometimes playful, and ever joyous sounds of Ukrainian Christmas carols and щедрівки, performed by the O. Koshetz Choir (Miroslava Paches, conductor), the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral Choir (Dr. Jeff Saranchuk, conductor), Sts. Vladimir and Olga Ukrainian Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral Choir and Children's Choir (Miroslava Paches, conductor), the Lyre Trio (Katrusia Basarab, Sofia Bilozor, Larissa Klymkiw), and Hoosli Ukrainian Male Chorus (Walter Skakun and Bill Solomon, conductors).

Martha Chuchman, Secretary of the Board of Directors, presented Christmas and New Year greetings on behalf of Oseredok, and thanked all Festival participants - particularly the choirs and their directors, for making the Festival of Carols such a wonderful success!

Most certainly the hightlight of this year's Festival of Carols was the lighting of candles with the Peace Light of Bethlehem and a rousing rendition of Бог Предвічний by all present!

Oseredok is accepting registration for two levels of Ukrainian Language classes for beginners in the new year. If you're interested, register TODAY!

Ukrainian for Beginners I

January 16 to March 26, 2012   (Mondays, 6 - 8 pm, 10 weeks)

Aimed at those with no knowledge of Ukrainian, this course focuses on the mastery of the Ukrainian alphabet and a vocabulary of approximately 100 words.

Ukrainian for Beginners II

January 14 to March 24, 2012   (Saturday, 10 am - 12 noon, 10 weeks)

This second level course is aimed at increasing vocabulary for those who know the Ukrainian alphabet, have some reading ability, and are familiar with basic everyday expressions.

Oleh Skrypka's delightful version of Shchedryk, aka "Carol of the Bells"!

SO,  WHICH IS IT?
Is it “Христос раждається” or “Христос рождається”?
You’d be correct if you said the first.
Here’s the mystery deciphered for you. “Раждається” (with an “a”) is an Old Church Slavonic (OCS) verb equivalent to the Ukrainian “народився”. You can find this verb (with an “a”) in OSC dictionaries and ancient books written in OSC. On the other hand, the noun “Рождество” (Nativity) is written with an “o”. And that’s the source of the confusion.
So, now you know!

Ukrainian Canadians and the Second World War

A Conference to be held November 11 and 12, 2011

Oseredok Ukrainian Cultural and Educational Centre

The Second World War marked a turning point in the history of Ukrainians in Canada. The conflict simultaneously heightened tensions within the Ukrainian community while uniting fractious and formerly hostile organizations in common cause with Canada’s war effort. The war further helped to change mainstream perceptions of Ukrainians as an undesirable and unassimilable “foreign” element in Canadian society, and made sudden and unlikely allies of the Western democracies and the Soviet Union as the European conflict widened with the Nazi invasion of the USSR.

Eleven presenters from across Canada will take a look at various aspects of Ukrainian Canadian life between 1938 and 1946. The themes of the conference will be explored in six sessions – Resources for Studying the War, the War before the War, Stories from the Front, The Impact of the European War on Canadian Ukrainians, Developments on the Home Front, and A Manitoba War Story.

In addition on Friday night there will be a film screening of The North Star, a Hollywood rendition of the War in Ukraine. Directed by Lewis Milestone and written by Lillian Hellman, with music by Aaron Copland, lyrics by Ira Gershwin, it stars Anne Baxter, Dana Andrews, Walter Huston, Walter Brennan and Erich von Stroheim. Discussion will follow.

FIELDWORK IN UKRAINIAN SEX by Oksana Zabuzhko, Translated by Halyna Hryn
Called “the most influential Ukrainian book for the 15 years of independence, “Field Work in Ukrainian Sex” by Oksana Zabuzhko is the tale of one woman’s personal revolt provoked by a top literary scandal of the decade. The author, a noted Ukrainian poet and novelist, explains: “When you turn 30, you inevitably start reconsidering what you have been taught in your formative years—that is, if you really seek for your own voice as a writer. In my case, my personal identity crisis had coincided with the one experienced by my country after the advent of independence. The result turned explosive: ‘Field Work in Ukrainian Sex.’”
