The launch of the book "SWEET SNOW" by Dr. Alexander Motyl!

Alexander J. Motyl is a specialist on Ukraine, Russia, and the USSR, and on nationalism, revolutions, empires, and theory as well as a writer and painter. Dr. Motyl has taught at Columbia University, Lehigh University, and Harvard University and is currently professor of political science at Rutgers University-Newark.

SWEET SNOW is set in the Ukraine in the winter of 1933. While a terrible famine rages in the countryside, the secret police are arresting suspected spies in the cities. A German aristocrat from Prussia, a Jewish communist from New York, a Polish diplomat from Lviv, and a Ukrainian nationalist from Vienna come to share a cell. As they are being transported, their van overturns and they are freed - to wander amidst the devastated villages, desolate landscapes, and frozen corpses. As they struggle to survive, they come to grips with the horror of the famine as well as with their own delusions, weaknesses, and mortality.

Oseredok is once again participating in Culture Days, a nationwide initiative to celebrate Canadian arts and culture and to raise awareness and participation in artistic and cultural activities.

Oseredok is offering two pysanka workshops, at no charge, to anyone interested in trying their hand at writing a pysanka.

Workshops times: 10:30 am to 12:30 pm, and

                             2:00 to 4:00 pm

You may be familiar with Alexander J. Motyl as an articulate blogger on issues related to Ukraine and its government. But Dr. Motyl is not just a blogger. He is an eminent professor, writer and artist. He has a PhD in political science and taught at Columbia University, Lehigh University, Harvard, and most recently, is teaching at Rutgers University-Newark.

It's his literary career that brings him to Oseredok. Alexander Motyl's newest novel Sweet Snow features a German nobleman from Berlin, a Jewish communist from New York, a Polish diplomat from Lwow, and a Ukrainian nationalist from Vienna wandering Ukraine in the winter of 1933, struggling to survive amidst the horror of the Famine-Genocide while attempting to evade the Soviet secret police.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY - EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT

The Ukrainian Cultural and Educational Centre (Oseredok) is one of North America’s largest and most unique Ukrainian cultural and heritage resource centre operating a museum, art gallery, library and archives, as well as a boutique. Oseredok is a non-profit heritage institution dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Ukrainian cultural heritage in Canada.

The Executive Assistant reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for a wide variety of administrative and operational duties ranging from basic clerical support to more complex functions in the areas of finance, office management, building and property, communication, programs and human resources to facilitate the delivery of the Centre’s programs and services in an effective and efficient manner. The Executive Assistant also oversees the operations of the boutique.

In addition to a minimum of two years administrative experience, preferably at the executive level, with some Board exposure in a non-profit environment, the ideal candidate will be an innovative thinker, open to new ideas, processes and applications, and possess the following:

• Strong interpersonal and excellent communication (verbal & written) skills in both English and Ukrainian languages;
• Demonstrated ability to work well in an environment with multiple and often changing priorities;
• Strong time management, multi-tasking and organizational skills;
• Critical thinking capabilities that analyze information and use logic to address issues, problems and challenges;
• Intermediate level proficiency with Word, Excel, and Outlook with demonstrated proficiency with PowerPoint and PDF conversions;
• Demonstrated proficiency in utilizations and applications of digital media including social media, websites and blogs;
• Previous minute taking and interpretation, with minimum typing speed 40 wpm, a definite asset.

In addition to our comprehensive benefits package, this position offers a competitive salary range of $34,000 - $42,000. While the general hours of work will be Monday to Friday 9:00 a. m. to 5:00 p.m. this position requires scheduling flexibility that will include occasional evenings and weekends.

Oseredok is pleased to present a lecture by Prof. Mstyslav Yurchenko of Kyiv on the recent discovery of works by 18th century Ukrainian composer Maksym Berezovsky.
The lecture will take place Monday, August 26th at 7:00 pm at 184 Alexander Avenue E., Winnipeg.
This is a wonderful and rare opportunity to find out about the discovery of these works and to hear their recent concert recordings (video and audio).

The lecture will be presented by Prof. Mstyslav Yurchenko, musicologist from Kyiv, and will include an audio presentation.

If colour and design in textiles attracts your attention, then this exhibition will pique your interest!

The range of ornamental motifs on both kylymy and rushnyky, from geometric to floral, and the selection of colour reflect regional preferences. Whether woven or embroidered, kylymy and rushnyky had both a utilitarian and a ritual function. As ritual objects, they had a role to play in important rites of passage, such as birth, marriage and death. As utilitarian or decorative objects they reflect the particular aesthetic of the artisans who created them.

Alexander Motyl is a writer, poet and political scientist, working in New York.

Dr. Alexander Motyl is a scholar and an artist. By day he is a professor of political science at Rutgers-Newark. A specialist on Ukraine, Russia, and the USSR, and on nationalism, revolutions, empires, and theory, he is the author of 10 books of nonfiction,  and a contributor of dozens of articles to academic and policy journals, newspaper op-ed pages, and magazines. He also has a weekly blog, “Ukraine’s Orange Blues.”

By night Motyl is a novelist, poet, and painter. His novels include Sweet Snow (Cervená Barva Press, 2013); My Orchidia (BrickHouse Books, 2012); The Jew Who Was Ukrainian (Cervená Barva, 2011); Who Killed Andrei Warhol (Seven Locks Press, 2007); Flippancy (Cantara Books, 2007); and Whiskey Priest (iUniverse, 2005). His poems have appeared in Counterexample Poetics, Istanbul Literary Review and New York Quarterly, and he has performed his fiction at the Cornelia Street Café, the Bowery Poetry Club, and the Ukrainian Museum in New York. 

A native New Yorker, Motyl received his doctoral degree in political science, master of philosophy in political science, and master of international affairs from Columbia University. He earned his bachelor of arts in history from Columbia College.
