THE JOY OF CAROLS AND A NEW WORD!

FESTIVAL OF CAROLS

On Sunday January 13th the majestic walls of Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral in Winnipeg echoed with the joyous sounds of Ukrainian Christmas carols!
This year's Festival of Carols featured performances by the Sts. Vladimir and Olga Ukrainian Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral Choir and Children's Choir directed by Miroslava Paches, Hoosli Ukrainian Male Chorus directed by William Solomon and Walter Skakun, and the O.Koshetz Choir directed by Miroslava Paches.

And as tradition would now have it, the final carol, Бог Предвічний - The Eternal God, was sung by all present in wonderful and celebratory harmony!

Oseredok extends a very heartfelt "Дякуємо!" to the choirs and their directors, and to the volunteers who assisted in making this year's Festival of Carols the success that is was!

Until next year!

LAST DAYS OF THE STORY OF PLAST

Oseredok's current exhibition - The Story of Plast, 100 Years of Ukrainian Scouting, is drawing to a close. Tomorrow, January 26th, is the final day to view the extraordinary story of a youth movement originating in Ukraine, the patriotism of its members, its persecution and banning followed by clandestine activities, its revival and success beyond the Ukrainian homeland, and its successful rebirth in Ukraine.

Heidimarie Stefanyshyn-Piper
Among the curiosities in the exhibition are two items from outer space! A Plast eagle emblem pin and plastun patch traveled in space in 2006 and 2008 with Heidimarie Stefanyshyn-Piper, captain of the United States Navy, and a plastunka.

Both items appear in the exhibition courtesy of the National Executive, Plast Ukrainian Scouting Organization in USA.

Also coming to an end this weekend is A Gift to Plast from its Youngest Members Art Exhibition. See the whimsical and colourful expressions of what Plast means to its youngest members, ages 6-12.

Oseredok is open Saturday January 26th from 10 am to 4 pm.

A NEW UKRAINIAN WORD - ТРАВЛЕНКА!

Over the last few years we've noted the sky-rocketing popularity of a new approach to pysanky writing - etching!

In our Boutique, these etched pysanky fly off the shelves even before we put them out! And last year, Oseredok offered it's first ever etched pysanka workshop, which was highly attended.

Not long ago your blogmeister came across a new word - "травленка", (travlenka) - a Ukrainian word meaning "etched egg". The word is derived from the Ukrainian word for etching - "травлення".
So now that you know, you can learn to make your very own travlenka!

Oseredok is once again offering an ETCHED PYSANKA WORKSHOP on Saturday, March 9, 2013 from 2 - 4 pm. This is a unique opportunity to learn this new pysanka writing technique using acid on a brown egg to give it a three-dimensional effect. This workshop is for those who have already mastered the traditional wax-resist method of pysanky writing.
Instructor: Michele Kotak
Class size is limited. All supplies provided.
Cost: $20 non-members/$15 members
