BECOMING CANADIAN:
Ukrainian Canadians and the Second World War
A Conference to be held November 11 and 12, 2011
Oseredok Ukrainian Cultural and Educational Centre
184 Alexander Ave. East, Winnipeg

The Second World War marked a turning point in the history of Ukrainians in Canada. The conflict simultaneously heightened tensions within the Ukrainian community while uniting fractious and formerly hostile organizations in common cause with Canada’s war effort. The war further helped to change mainstream perceptions of Ukrainians as an undesirable and unassimilable “foreign” element in Canadian society, and made sudden and unlikely allies of the Western democracies and the Soviet Union as the European conflict widened with the Nazi invasion of the USSR.

Eleven presenters from across Canada will take a look at various aspects of Ukrainian Canadian life between 1938 and 1946. The themes of the conference will be explored in six sessions – Resources for Studying the War, the War before the War, Stories from the Front, The Impact of the European War on Canadian Ukrainians, Developments on the Home Front, and A Manitoba War Story.

To access the conference programme go to http://www.ualberta.ca/CIUS/Becoming_Canadian.pdf

In addition on Friday night there will be a film screening of The North Star, a Hollywood rendition of the War in Ukraine. Directed by Lewis Milestone and written by Lillian Hellman, with music by Aaron Copland, lyrics by Ira Gershwin, it stars Anne Baxter, Dana Andrews, Walter Huston, Walter Brennan and Erich von Stroheim. Discussion will follow.

Registration is $40 for the full two day conference; or $25 per day. No fee for students, but advance registration is required. Deadline for registration is Monday, November 7th. To register call 942-0218 or register in person at 184 Alexander Ave. East. You can also email us at ucec@mymts.net

New in the Boutique

Oseredok Boutique is in high gear preparing for Christmas Fair, which will take place Friday December 9 from 10am to 9pm and Saturday December 10 from 10am to 4pm. Shipments are arriving from across the continent, and across the sea! Keep watching for postings on new products for Christmas Fair!

Meanwhile, here are just a few new things in the Boutique…

UNDER THE UNBROKEN SKY by Shandi Mitchell
An emotionally resonant tale of family, survival, love and betrayal told with cinematic aplomb.
In the spring of 1938, Teodor Mykolayenko returns to his family after a year spent in prison for the crime of trying to feed them. His wife and children have been living under the care of his sister Anna on the harsh and unforgiving prairie landscape. Channelling the great inner power that enabled him to survive drought, starvation, warfare, and Stalin’s crimes in Ukraine, he takes to the land with unbending resolve, and as the crops grow, his family heals and strengthens.  But the family’s hopes and newfound happiness are short-lived when Anna’s rogue husband returns with an unforgiveable plan that threatens to take away everything they have built.  A novel about family, pride, the resiliency and fragility of the human spirit and the fine line between those who break and those who don’t, Under This Unbroken Sky is a magnificent piece of storytelling from a remarkable new voice in contemporary literature.

FIELDWORK IN UKRAINIAN SEX by Oksana Zabuzhko, Translated by Halyna Hryn
Called “the most influential Ukrainian book for the 15 years of independence, “Field Work in Ukrainian Sex” by Oksana Zabuzhko is the tale of one woman’s personal revolt provoked by a top literary scandal of the decade. The author, a noted Ukrainian poet and novelist, explains: “When you turn 30, you inevitably start reconsidering what you have been taught in your formative years—that is, if you really seek for your own voice as a writer. In my case, my personal identity crisis had coincided with the one experienced by my country after the advent of independence. The result turned explosive: ‘Field Work in Ukrainian Sex.’”

A blue and yellow Woodstock....

...and immediately on the heels of our Pot of Gold draw, Oseredok Boutique went into high gear, loading up the wagons for the annual trek to that Ukrainian festival of festivals, that uniquely Ukrainian Woodstock - Canada's National Ukrainian Festival in Dauphin, Manitoba!
To say it was "fun" is an understatement! Oseredok's "дівчата" - Bohdana, Pat, Linda, Michelle, and Michelle's little hedgehog "Epic" -  spent three days shmoozing, dancing (mostly to Oleh Skrypka's version of  "Ти з любови собі не жартуй"), singing, and, of course, selling wonderful embroidery, caps, t-shirts, and jewellery to festival-goers from across Canada (well, mostly from the prairie provinces...some from Ontario...and even a Crimean Tatar from Weyburn, Saskatchewan!).
A great big "Дякую, дівчата"!

Pat Tymkiw and Linda Hunter at the Oseredok Boutique Kiosk

Get your Ukrainian on!

The festival season in Winnipeg is still going strong during Folklorama! So it's time to "get your Ukrainian on" with a new traditional embroidered blouse or shirt, contemporary embroidered tops, and embroidered t-shirts, hoodies, and Trypyllian caps!

PLUS! Oseredok Boutique just received in stock a book that would make Martha Stewart green with envy!
UKRAINIAN STYLE - by Linda Wicklund and Alecia Stevens celebrates village life and brings it home!
The book is filled with beautiful interior design and culinary ideas, and is a must for those interested in having their homes "put their Ukrainian on" in a contemporary/country style.

Oseredok Ukrainian Cultural and Educational Centre and Oseredok Boutique are open Monday through Saturday from 10am to 4pm, and Sunday from 1 - 4pm!

P.S....

Your friendly blog-meister is leaving for holidays, and will be back to fill you in on all the happenings at Oseredok at the beginning of September!

Of a new location, a new word, and new stuff!

LOCATION! LOCATION! A CHANGE IN LOCATION!

Due to circumstances beyond our control, Oseredok has relocated its Martinis and Manicures fundraiser to a great new venue - BOA LOUNGE at 177 Lombard Avenue (at Rorie) in Winnipeg! The time is still the same - Thursday, July 21, 2011 from 5:30 to 9:30pm.

Today's New Word...

This is a good word to know, and a good thing to have when the prairie sun scorches the air to 30 plus degrees Celsius…кондиціонер. Air conditioner.
It is a pleasure to announce – with great relief, and many thanks to Don and Matthew – that Oseredok’s кондиціонер has been hooked up, and is providing pleasant cool air throughout our building.
Come, cool off with us! Visit the Baba’s Trunk exhibition, then pop into Oseredok Boutique to pick up a little something for yourself, or someone special – a book to read at the lake, a new вишиванка, a board game, or a nice ceramic piece for your patio table!

New Stuff in the Boutique!

The postal strike in Canada kept Oseredok Boutique on pins and needles,
as items ordered from Ukraine, the US, and many parts of Canada were “stuck” in the system….shipped out, but no place to go!
Finally, with the strike over, the boxes began to arrive – jewellery, CDs, and generally funky items from Ukraine, brand new silver tryzuby from the US, and more jewellery from within Canada. It was like a visit from Sviaty Mykolay!

Make sure to pop into Oseredok Boutique on your visit to the Baba’s Trunk exhibition! (Remember, the кондиціонер is working!)

Oseredok is open Monday through Saturday from 10am to 4pm, and Sunday from 1 - 4pm.

Win a $1000 Pot of Gold…

…You could be the lucky $1000 winner in our Pot of Gold raffle. Tickets are $20 each, with only 300 tickets printed.
Every 10th ticket is a winner, with prizes ranging from $25 to $1000!
Get your tickets by calling 942-0218.

We are pleased to announce that Tara and Ivanna have joined Oseredok’s staff for the summer months – July and August. They will be happy to help you with your inquiries, and your purchases in the Boutique!

The heat is on! The air conditioning is off!

Winnipeg is experiencing its first sizzling hot and humid prairie summer days. And although the air conditioning unit is back up on the roof, it isn’t connected yet.
Staff is managing with cool drinks, breeze breaks (standing outside for a minute or two), and lots of good humour!
We hope to have the unit running  later this evening!

Summer Sundays

Oseredok will be open Sundays from 1 – 4pm in July and August, starting this Sunday, July 3, 2011! Spend a Sunday afternoon viewing the Baba’s Trunk exhibition, or browsing through the Boutique!

Avoid a manicure faux pas!

Of children, calendars, and air conditioning

A GAGGLE OF CHILDREN!

Over 60 students of the Ukrainian-English Bilingual Program of Springfield Heights School visited Oseredok this morning. They viewed the Baba’s Trunk exhibit, and learned about the kind of items that would have been brought in a trunk or suitcase by various waves of immigrants from Ukraine.
The youngest children made up their own “trunk”, filling it with all the things that they thought would be necessary for a journey away from home, and necessary to maintain identity – rushnyky, Sunday-best shirts and blouses, vests, a Kobzar, and others (game console, stuffed animals, and favourite blanket, too!)

Springfield Heights students making their own скриня

The oldest children patiently learned the art of gerdany – sort of! They worked with seed beads to create a friendship ring or bracelet, using the materials and weaving principles of making gerdany.

Tetyana Hawaleshka shows the fine art of making gerdany-like rings and bracelets
Was a good time had by all? You bet!
Thank you to the staff of Springfield Heights School for bringing the children to Oseredok annually to discover more about their heritage, and to have fun, too!

THE ROOF REPORT

The air conditioning unit came back today! There’s still a handful of detailed jobs to finish before the project is complete, not the least of which is the re-booting of the air conditioning system itself! With the prairie summer in full heat, it can’t happen soon enough!

A bird's-eye view of the air conditioning unit being hoisted atop the Oseredok building

ABOUT CALENDARS!

Some have pointed out a calendular conundrum in our current Pot of Gold raffle, which is taking place July 23, 2011, but is called the “Canada Day Pot of Gold Raffle” (Canada Day falls on July 1 of every year!).
We say – every day is Canada Day!
Others could say – it’s Canada day according to the old calendar!
Whichever the theory – the Pot of Gold raffle can definitely make you $1000.00 richer on July 23! Make sure to get your tickets as soon as possible!
But really, now…according to the new calendar - it’s Ivana Kupala!

Tickets are still available for Oseredok's Martinis & Manicures fundraiser July 21, 2011 at 6 Degrees Martini Bar and Wine Lounge! $25 gets you a martini, a manicure, and a great evening out!
